I partner with Beyond Fences, a local, grassroots, social justice organization in NC (led by Lori Hensley and Amanda Arrington) that is focused on access to support services for nonhuman animals and associated issues related to poverty and institutionalized racism. I share their interest in shifting the dominant paradigm of the national animal rescue community in the direction of democratic engagement. We have shared their work in and with communities at two SLCE conferences, as a case study for inquiring into transactional and transformational community work and to engage conference participants in thinking about change practices through the organization’s framework of moving people “beyond judgment” through integrating cultural humility, empathy, and systems critique.
